About “On a Mood Swing”
On a Tuesday night, I was waiting in the renowned line at Berghain by myself for Max Richter concert. I knew I had to wait at least an hour, so I put my headphones on and started listening to Philip Bader’s Wishful Thinking album. There was a great track that prompted me to pay attention to its name, then another and another… While these names were floating around in my mind they formed this poetic sentence.

How do electronic music tracks get their names? Mostly, there are no lyrics. They are abstract in a way, but not called “untitled” as many abstract paintings. How do words correspond to rhythmic sounds? Are the titles derived from the mood of the producer, the mood of the track or the mood of its context? Is it possible to get an idea about the context by blending these titles together?
In his book Berlin Sampler - From Cabaret to Techno, Theo Lessor righteously notes, “Berlin became the nervous centre of the entire electronic music industry.”
On a Mood Swing is a work that is influenced by electronic dance music echoing in the city of Berlin. The work is comprised of three parts, a book, a text and an audio piece.
The book contains 1488 track names by 88 electronic music producers who are currently based in Berlin accompanied by a list of those artist’s names. Pages of the book are cut into stripes. On each stripe, a track name and a sign indicating the name of the producer is written. It’s a book of numerous short poetic text generator.
The text is made up of 276 track names written in the book and it is spread in a spiral form around the book that is laying open on the surface hung from the ceiling. This poetic text comments on a particular culture bubbling in Berlin that was once underground, and that is evolved with the generous nourishment of infinitely continuous music. It involves nightlife, moods and atmosphere and vaguely, a sense of the Berlin vibe.
The audio piece has a DJ set structure. Only, it is produced according to the text, not to the musical harmony of tracks with one another. This 2 hour long piece is mixed and arranged with small bits of those 276 tracks, in the same order of their titles that formed the text. Between the genres of Techno and House music, this mix of Berlin sounds is playing in the loop simultaneously from four headphones, which are attached to an mp3 player hidden under the surface.

Bir salı akşamı, Max Richter konseri için gittiğim Berghain’ın meşhur kuyruğunda yalnız başıma beklemeye koyuldum. Sırada en az bir saat bekleyeceğimi bildiğim için kulaklığımı takıp Philip Bader’in Wishful Thinking albümünü dinlemeye başladım. Kafam rahat! Çok beğendiğim bir parça beni ismine bakmaya itti. Devamında bir tane daha ve sonra bir tane daha… Bu parça isimleri aklımda dolanırken şu şiirsel cümleyi oluşturdular.

Çoğunlukla sözün olmadığı ve türler arasında soyut kalan elektronik müzik parçaları neye göre isimlendirilir? Soyut resimdeki gibi, parçalar “isimsiz” değillerdir. Tekrar eden ritimler ve melodilerden oluşan elektronik ses gruplarının dildeki karşılığı nasıl oluşur? İsimlerin kaynağı yapımcıların, parçaların, çalındıkları mekanların, dinleyenlerin ve dinlendikleri atmosferlerin ruh hallerinden yola çıkıp, bu durumlar üzerine ifadeler oluşturuyor olabilirler mi? Bu sözcükleri harmanlayarak köken ve yapıyla ilgili bir kanıya varıbilir mi?
Berlin Sampler - From Cabaret to Techno adlı kitabında, Theo Lassor haklı olarak Berlin’in, bütün elektronik müzik endüstrisinin sinir merkezi haline geldiğini belirtiyor.
On a Mood Swing, yaşadığımız zaman diliminde Berlin’de yankılanan elektronik dans müziğiden esinlenerek kitap, metin ve ses olmak üzere üç parçadan oluşur.
Kitap sadece Berlin’de yaşayan 88 sanatçıya ait 1488 elektronik müzik parçasının isimlerini ve bu sanatçıların isimlerinin listesini içerir. Parça isimleri, yanında ait olduğu sanatçının ismini belirten işaret ile birlikte alt alta yazılmış, sayfalar ise her birinde bir satır olmak üzere şeritlere kesilmiştir. Sınırsız sayıda şiirsel kısa metin üretme özelliğine sahip bir kitaptır bu.
Metin, kitap içinde bulunan 276 parça isminden meydana gelir ve bir asılı yüzey üzerinde duran kitabın çevresinde spiral şeklinde yayılır. Bu şiirsel metin, bir zamanlar “yeraltı”nda olan, yıllar içerisinde sonsuza akan müziklerin bonkörce beslemesiyle gelişen ve Berlin’de fokurdayan belirli bir kültürden bahseder. Gece hayatı, ruh halleri ve çevrenin atmosferini barındırır ve belli belirsiz bir şekilde şehrin titreşimini sezdirir.
İşin üçüncü parçasını oluşturan ses, kısmen “DJ set” yapısını taşır. Ancak bu set parçaların birbirine olan müzikal uyumuna değil ama hikayeye dayanarak düzenlenmiştir. Metni oluşturan isimlerin diziliş sırasını bire bir takip ederek, bu parçalardan alınan kısımlar ile kurgulanmıştır. Techno ve House türleri arasında gezinen müziklerden oluşan yaklaşık bir saatlik bu parça, yüzeyin altına gizli bir mp3 çalara bağlı dört kulaklıktan aynı anda çalar. Bittiğinde tekrar başlar.
